In-Person Class Attendance

Update: August 25, 2022

HDS general policy is that classes will be in-person and on campus, both for students and faculty.

However, faculty may use their discretion to provide remote access and/or record class sessions for guests, or for students who are not able to attend a particular class due to a last-minute medical concern.

In addition, students with certain medical circumstances may receive an accommodation to have remote access for a significant block of time or even the whole semester. These cases are generally rare and will be communicated to you by the Office of Student Services. In such cases, faculty will be obliged to livestream their classes on Zoom for that student and may contact IT & Media Services for assistance.

Faculty with medical conditions should talk with the Office for Academic Affairs.

Other than these special cases, HDS classes should occur in person on campus. A zoom link for any given class should only be granted to those with explicit permission from Student Services or yourself.

Faculty are free to record their classes and then make them available on their course websites if they choose to. That is an individual decision; some faculty will do this and others will not.

Concerning mask-wearing in class: faculty may enforce a mask mandate in the classroom if they choose to, or they may request for students to wear masks but not require it. Or they can choose to say nothing about it at all, while allowing those students who feel the need to wear a mask. Instructors are free to make this choice based on the specific needs of their students or their own concerns.

Please contact Karin Grundler-Whitacre in the Office for Academic Affairs, or Tim Whelsky in Student Services, if you have questions.
